Physical Education

Vision

We aim to develop the knowledge; skills and attributes children need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. At St Nicholas Catholic Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos and links closely to our Christian values. When taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

 Intent

At St Nicholas we are committed to providing a curriculum for all where every child grows:

  • Academically
  • Socially
  • Morally
  • In aspiration
  • To be prepared for the next phase in their academic journey and be spiritually nourished.

To achieve excellence in all that they do in the knowledge that we love one another as God loves you.

Implementation

To take part in a wider range of competitions.

Tailored after school and PE sessions towards the children’s interests.

Promotion of after school clubs increasing the participation for all years.

Mini competitions within key stages in the summer term hosted by the G&T/Sport Leaders.

Lunchtime clubs to focus on the non-active children.

Foundation stage children using gross motor skills across a broad range of activities.

Yoga sessions for mindfulness.

Cohort lists to track the participation of the children going to competitions. Update with after school club, workshops and competition participation.

Gymnastic coaching to support delivering of high-quality gymnastic sessions.

Staff training with Jasmine (Real PE) for all years.

CPD opportunities for teachers – Swimming, tennis, balance bikes.

Recap in Jasmine and Real Gym training.

Outdoor LTP is a spiral curriculum which allows to enhance skills and master the discipline.

To continue to participate in competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Sports Leaders in Year 5 and 6 to focus on leadership skills.

Assess not only the skills but the child as a whole by using the Real PE cogs focusing on personal, social, cognitive, physical fitness, creativity and health.

Curriculum

As part of the National curriculum it is compulsory for all children to experience 2 hours of Physical Education a week. Therefore we are committed to children experiencing indoor and outdoor PE sessions. We have created a long term plan that allows children to learn about a range of sports and at the same time develop their skills. The skills the children focus on are sport specific skills and skills based around self awareness and sportsmanship.

Swimming

Throughout the year our year 4 and 5 children attend swimming lessons once a week at Fearnville leisure centre. Our aim is for every child to be able to swim to a least 25 metres and understanding how to be safe in the water. The children are taught by a range of staff from the leisure centre and coached swimming staff from St Nicholas.

The National Curriculum requirement for all children leaving Year 6 is to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Sport Leaders

Children in Year 5 and 6 have the opportunity to be Sports Leaders. Within this role our young sports leaders have the opportunity to plan and deliver sporting opportunities for other children at break and lunch times. They will be involved in planning activities during sports weeks at St Nicholas.

Sports Leaders - Pupil Voice

Last years sports leaders came up with an idea to bring the Winter Olympics to St Nicholas. They worked through their lunches to come up with ideas on how to do this. They worked together to create an assembly to deliver to the students. They even wrote a letter to Mrs Burns to ask for permission. Mrs Burns agreed and the Sports Leaders carried out a very successful day. They decided on Curling, Speed Skating and Ice Hockey and the children absolutely loved these activities.

At St Nicholas Catholic Primary School we offer a number of sporting options as part of our after school clubs which are offered to all years.

We send out on either a termly or half termly application forms for the after school clubs.

After school clubs last until 4.15pm, please ensure that your children are picked up promptly.

All children must have a PE Kit in school. It is to be left in school and will be sent home at the end of the half term.

Our indoor PE kit consists of black t-shirt, a pair of black shorts and black pumps.

Our outdoor PE kit consists of black plain jogging bottoms and plain black t-shirt and jumper/hoodie (to keep warm in the winter). Your child/ren should also have trainers for their outdoor PE sessions. Trainers are important due to health and safety when taking part in outdoor PE. Make sure the trainers your children are wearing are appropriate, no football boots or fashion trainers with chunky soles.

Home Learning Activities

We believe that it is important for the children and their families to have time during the day to ensure they have a healthy balance of work and exercise.

At St Nicholas we believe that children's fitness is very important and we encourage a fit and healthy life style. We have created some activities that you can do at home to keep the healthy life style motivation. You can download and print these activities to keep and use over and over again.
